WHAT IS Oversized Plates

Oversized Plates are required for any designs that fall within 0.25” of the card edge, including full-bleed designs, and use plate stamping printing techniques. A design is considered full-bleed if it goes right to the very edge of the card. These plate requiring techniques include: emboss, deboss, foil stamping, thermography and letterpress. If the design comes within 0.25” of the edge of the card, a larger plate is required to be crafted to accurately apply the print feature. If any part of your design intends to utilize any of the aforementioned plate requiring printing techniques and does fall within 0.25” of the card edge, please be sure to select the oversized plates option on our price calculator or the displayed price will not be accurate. Oversized plates allow for more space to be used in the design, and can greatly enhance the look of your cards! 

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

● Even just a small portion of a plate-stamping design falling within 0.25” of the card edge will require oversized plates. 
● Full-bleed plate stamping techniques cannot be combined with edge paint or edge foil, but designs within 2mm of the card edge will be compatible in most cases. 
● Thermography designs requiring oversized plates are not compatible with edge foil or edge paint.
● Plate stamping techniques applied with oversized plates unevenly over the card, for example the design falls only within 0.25” of the card edge on the left side but not the right, may lead to the card being curved or bent.
